A $3$ by $3$ by $3$ cube is made of $27$ small cubes. Kim pushes out the row of $3$ small cubes that goes straight through the middle from the front face to the back face. Then she pushes out every small cube still left in the row that goes straight through the middle from the left face to the right face. How many small cubes are left?
