Symmetric Matrices & Quadratic Forms · Hard problem

A structure's strain energy is a quadratic form q(x)=xTKxq(\mathbf x)=\mathbf x^{T}K\mathbf x for its (symmetric) stiffness matrix KK. Two displacement modes u\mathbf u and v\mathbf v have energies q(u)=10q(\mathbf u)=10 and q(v)=14q(\mathbf v)=14. When both modes are excited together, the combined displacement u+v\mathbf u+\mathbf v has energy q(u+v)=40q(\mathbf u+\mathbf v)=40. Find the interaction energy uTKv\mathbf u^{T}K\mathbf v, without ever learning KK, u\mathbf u, or v\mathbf v explicitly.
