Percent Means Out of 100

“Percent” literally means per hundred, so p%p\% is the fraction p100\dfrac{p}{100}. Finding a percent of a number is just multiplying by that fraction.

25100×80=14×80=20\dfrac{25}{100} \times 80 = \dfrac{1}{4} \times 80 = 20.

10100×50=110×50=5\dfrac{10}{100} \times 50 = \dfrac{1}{10} \times 50 = 5.

75100×40=34×40=30\dfrac{75}{100} \times 40 = \dfrac{3}{4} \times 40 = 30.

A multi-step problem

A $24\$24 shirt is 25%25\% off, and you also have a $2\$2 coupon. Step 1: 25%25\% of 2424 is 66, so the sale price is 246=1824 - 6 = 18. Step 2: the coupon brings it to 182=$1618 - 2 = \$16.
