Concept
The Big Idea
345678

Each dot is one measurement. Stacks show repeats, so the tallest stack is the most common value and the spread left to right is the range.

Example
Finding the range

The largest value is 88 and the smallest is 33, so the range is 83=58 - 3 = 5.

In Plain Terms & More Examples

Concept
In plain terms

Each dot is one measurement. The tallest stack is the most common value (the mode), and the distance from smallest to largest is the range.

Example
Reading a plot

For the values 2,3,3,3,52, 3, 3, 3, 5, the value 33 appears most, so the mode is 33.

Example
Its range

The largest is 55 and the smallest is 22, so the range is 52=35 - 2 = 3.
